Guest Speakers

Ward 3 Councilor Phil Griffin

Councilor Griffin will be working as the Chair of the Public Safety and Accounting committees.

Projects that he is working with:

a.        The Leal project which received a grant for a façade improvement

b.       The 727 Venue which is trying to plan a gathering for all businesses to meet & gather, currently only Teen Challenge is the only other option for people to gather in area.

c.        Working along with the planning & zoning depts at the old Stone & tire building

He is also collaborating with the school department to aid with the current climate and can’t speak to why the National Guard was denied but he believes there is a lack of leadership in the school administration. Teachers are trying to just protect themselves and other students & getting 51As for child abuse. The mindset of students now is different, it’s too late by the time they get to HS to start disciplining. Need to be proactive!

Ward 4 Susan Nicastro

Councilor Nicastro continues to work with the Zoning and Planning committees, but her priorities are the same as they were when she started in 2018.

a.        Focus on Safety

b.       Improve the Brockton residents Quality of life.

c.        Increase economic development.

` The city is working/planning on making changes to Campello but that takes time. They are using lots of the ideas and vision from the study done in 2018 to support the Complete Neighborhood grant project which focus is a sustainable, walkable neighborhood from Lawrence Street to the West Bridgewater line. They are taking the resident’s input and a report which will detail their plan/efforts should be available in appx 1 month.

On Thursday 2/29 at 1030 Neighbor works will have a groundbreaking ceremony on the new apartment complex to be built. Additional building news- the Campello high rises need to be rebuilt to replace the old structures or people will be without homes. If you would like to write a letter of support- please contact Susan at snicastro@cobma.us.

On 5/4 there will be a citywide clean-up and she would appreciate businesses getting involved. David Lynch volunteered to tow all unregistered cars for free, to get them off the street so street sweeping can happen. Just need support to know which ones in advance.

There was also a conversation regarding many properties that are for sale or have recently sold.

Lastly – the Mayor’s office encourages everyone to sign up for their newsletter at Mayor’s Newsletter - City of Brockton and if you have an immediate need- the Mayor’s personal cell is (508) 846-1208

Community Outreach

Officer Derek Salamone

-           Not a lot of complaints recently so “that’s good.”

-           BPD currently short 25-30 officers, mainly due to the residency requirement (must live in Brockton for 7 years or move to within the first year) as well as the process that is required (and needed) from start to finish (6 mo. @ academy, 3 weeks in house training, & 12 weeks FTO ride alongs)

o    Three new are working independently.

o    Three new recruits for May

o    Three new to start Academy.

If you know anyone that may be interested- refer them to start with Civil Service Examination Schedule | Mass.gov

-           Don’t know if community policing will be back anytime soon- between the shortage & the 350 million cut from budget.

·          Group expressed concerns about having a plan in place for the warm weather to deal with ATVs, Motorcycles, dirt bikes, and homelessness.
