Campello Business Association minutes August 13, 2013

Meeting held August 13, 2013 at the “Italian Kitchen” restaurant, 1071 Main Street, Brockton MA.

Meeting commenced at 7:00 p.m. with 18 members in attendance. In addition to Mayoral candidate Bill Carpenter and Councilor at Large candidate Steven P. Foote, Councilors Paul Studenski and Dennis Eaniri, as well as Police Chief Emanuel Gomes were in attendance.

Secretary Tom McLaughlin read the two “thank you” letters received from the 2013 C.B.A. scholarship recipients, Ms. Taylor Johnson and Ms. Rebecca Clark.

In Treasurer Ray St. Germain’s absence, Chairman Ron Bethoney read the treasurers report.

A motion was made and seconded the treasurers report was accepted as read.

Our newly appointed ambassador, Gary Leonard, gave hid first report in which was somewhat optimistic and encouraging. Gary reported that in late July he, as well as the Mayor and other key dignitaries, toured the Campello Business area in an effort to form a strategy to vitalize the area by enticing new business to the area as well as a “Beautification of Campello” plan. Others in attendance on this tour were: Mark Resnick manager of the Brockton Development Authority, as well as all City Councilors, Business Association Directors and representatives of the “21 st Century Corporation”. Gary further reported that late in July the Urban Land Institute will issue its report and outline the possibility of state and / or federal grants for the area. Gary will report the results at the next C.B.A. meeting. It was refreshing to hear that Mr. Leonard garnered 13 members for the Association.

Councilor at Large candidate Steven P. Foote spoke about his background and achievements. Like all other candidates, Mr. Foote concentrated on lowering taxes, crime and developing a plan to bring more business to Brockton.

Mayoral candidate Bill Carpenter gave a lengthy dissertation concerning his plan to “Save Brockton”. His plan concentrates on developing alternatives in power, water sewerage and electricity to increase the profit and tax margins in these areas.

Mr. Carpenter voiced an objective to converting Main Street back to a traditional “two way” street as is every Main Street in every city and town in the good old U.S.A.. He also states he is emphatically in favor of the “Power Plant”.

Councilor Eaniri was happy to report that the city has signed a contract with a lighting company to repair the street lights in Brockton.

mbassador Leonard recommended that the C.B.A. join the metro South Chamber of Commerce. Chairman Ron Bethoney advised that he believes that the C.B.A. charter specifically outlaws the C.B.A. from joining any other business organizations. Issue tabled until next meeting. In the interim, charter will be looked at for clarification.

Respectfully submitted

Thomas A. McLaughlin III

Secretary C.B.A.

Meeting of February 12, 2013.

Meeting commenced at 7:10 p.m. at the Italian Kitchen Restaurant.

There were 15 members in attendance.

David Lynch of Lynch’s Towing was put into nomination to fulfill a board of director seat and was unanimously approved.

Key speaker of the meeting was Brockton Police Chief Emmanuel Gomes. Chief Gomes discussed the new gunshot finder device location and its relevance in timely responses to crime scenes as well as solving crimes.

Chief Gomes also solicited comments from the members regarding the “foot patrols”. All of members voiced a more than satisfactory approval of these patrols as well as expressing the professionalism and courteousness of the officers. Chief Gomes states that the foot patrols will continue.

Chief Gomes discussed the new drug rehabilitation center and its adverse affects upon local businesses. This discussion was prompted by two members; Gary Leonard of Campello Coal Co. and Debby from Debby’s Family Hair Care, who advised Chief Gomes that runaways from the center had entered their businesses or locale and caused problems ie. using the bathroom, begging and soliciting. Chief Gomes explained that the drug center is not a lock-down facility and these things will happen. He urged all business owners to contact the police department when these instances occur. Chief Gomes urges Gary and Debby to turn these people away and used the stray cat theory: “Once you feed them, they will come again and again”.

Chief Gomes also showed the ambivalent side of his personality in that some people need help and should get it from the right sources / programs.

Stanley Litchfield, in line with Veterans, gave a talk about the Veterans programs, and 188 million dollar spinal cord facility to be constructed at the Brockton Veterans Hospital. 24 million dollars has already been approved and the balance is awaiting congressional approval. Stanley reiterated a Veteran should never be without a home!
